I received an e-mail from ASHA stating that the 2008 Membership Directory could now be viewed on line. Since I was hoping a hard copy could be obtained, I e-mailed a reply asking if one was available.

Several days passed, with no response, so today, I called and spoke with someone whose name I believe was Charlotte. I asked if a hard copy could be had; her response was that there would not be one since it was easier to keep the updates with regard to address and telephone number changes done on line. She did say she would pass on the request I had made....I neglected to ask to whom the request would be passed on....and she didn't ask my phone number to call me back to let me know the results of the "passing on."

Now, I don't always have a purse large enough in which to carry my computer, and I don't wish to have to print off a copy measuring 8.5 x 11, but I do like to have a directory with me for reference purposes.

If some of you will recall, we did get one of those 8.5 x 11 in 2005, I believe, stuck in an issue of the magazine; that wasn't well-received, and the directory reverted back to a hard copy in 2006. My address changed in 2007, and I suppose that is why I didn't receive one for last year....or maybe there wasn't a 2007 hard copy??

Is there anyone else out there who thinks there should be hard copies available, even if one would have to pay additionally for them?

The 2005-2006 Membership Directory (not the Reference Stallion Directory of 2007) is actually a compact (5 X 7?) paperback copy. My pages are worn, but I have used it quite often. I would think that carrying it to a sale or other event would be easier than carrying your desktop, monitor, keyboard, cords, mouse and pad to wherever you are going. I have a laptop, but here again, much more handy to stick this paperback in my purse and go. Also, not everyone has a computer yet, but most do. It's like carrying your address book along with you.

The USEF provides their rulebook online and in a hard copy if you ask for it at no extra charge. Here again the hard copy is in a compact notebook form that is easily carried to a horse show if you want to quickly check a rule. You can remove sections out of the book and leave that part of it at home if you want. A very handy tool.

I know we are trying to become a paperless, more green and economical society, but sometimes it is very nice to have a compact guide to work with.

Thanks for bringing this up.

I was looking at the directory this afternoon and having trouble seeing the complete list. I had to look up by state or zip. So far, not very user friendly

Wow, totally different experience than I had. I agree that a hard copy would be nice, but it would be so rare that I would want the entire directory, I just can't comment.

What I will say is that we are in the process of enlisting volunteers for Equine Affaire. The first day that it came out, I was able to search for the state of California - complete with email addresses and then create an email mailing list that I could send to all Californians. Those we could not reach, I easily printed it out and divided it amongst the 3 of us who needed to call.

What's more is that the ASHA was entirely receptive to the two glitches I ran into (you need to print it in landscape) and will be incorporating those suggestions. Matt was so friendly and helpful - and very appreciative of the feedback that I gave him regarding some outdated email addresses.

I thought it was great ...
