The next Fairview Amish Auction will be held next Saturday, January 12th at the new "Bluegrass Sales Stables" Auction Barn.
The auction starts with tack at 8:30am, followed by work horses at 9:30am, then buggies at 11:00am followed by the driving horses and then ponies. For those of you who haven't been before, there are usually minis, ponies, mules, drafts, standardbreds, dhh's, saddlebreds, and a few odds and ends. They are expecting approx. 150 horses and will be driving them for inspection starting at 8:30am.
The older horses (over 8) usually go very cheap(under $500), the Amish want the younger broke horses. The very young and the older ones are usually the ones in jeapordy of being picked up by a dealer and ending up in a bad situation. Even the most expensive young ones go for reasonable prices (under $3000). At the spring sale there were several 3-4 year old registered prospects by very notable stallions (Slam Dunk, Noble Vikking, Harlem Globemaster), as well as a 4yo gelding out of Hollywood Excellence!
Directions to the sale are travel on Hwy 68-80 from Hopkinsville, KY approx. 13 miles, turn right onto Hwy 475, sale is on the right. POC Phone # is 270-265-0102, if you call, they will fax you a "catalog" the day before the sale.

Since this is one of the things to do on my "bucket list":) , I'm going to try to go. Does anyone know the "terms" of the sale? (cash, check, letter from bank, etc.) I think the tack sale sounds very interesting.

I have paid with both cash and check at previous sales.

This is one of those times I wish money weren't so tight and gas wasn't so high. I would love to go! Silly Filly, if you do head that way - let me know. I may see what I can squander to make it or if I can drag/share expenses with anyone else.

Stacie, what does the weather forecast say for this weekend. I just saw ours, and they are predicting snow for Sunday! I want to go to the auction, but I don't want to get stuck there. It was 72 here today, 11 last Thursday...what's the deal?

I am looking for a hubby-safe draft horse. Would this be a good auction to find that type of older horse? The ideal gait is nothing faster than a walk!!!:)

The forecast for Saturday is Partly Cloudy, High 52F.
Yes, they usually have quite a few drafts, mostly Belgians, but I've seen some great Percherons, Haflingers, and draft mules. Sometimes you might see a Clydesdale or other draft. My favorite was an adorable grey percheron with an exquisite head that they said had pulled carriages in NYC. I was having to hold one of my customers hands down and kept repeating "You do not need a draft horse, You do not need a draft horse!" She was there trying to find an ASB broodmare prospect, and ended up with an absolutely regal Talent Town mare that brought $260 through the sale!!

I would kill for a mule. I am actually going to breed my mare to a Jack in 2009. I keep telling mom that I need a "practice mule" so that I am ready for mine in 2010. How much do they usually go for? Are they saddle mules, or are they mostly driving mules? Are there just Draft mules for the most part?

Satin, Check with saddlebred rescue. Nelia has a weakness for drafts. :)

Thank you for the information. I will check with SBR soon.:) Need to get my husband riding and distracted so that he doesn't notice the $$$$ going to my saddlebreds:D

I did. I had a blast! I didn't stay to the end, but from what I saw, the horses brought good money. I picked out 2 standardbreds and would've bought one of them, but they brought too much for me. There was a Percheron-Saddlebred cross that was very pretty. In the sale paper, it said, "Women can even drive this horse". I found that to be a very amusing statement.:p They even paid lots of money for a little Morgan who reared. They announced he was "trick" trained, and would rear when you said "up". I watched him, and he reared each time he stopped even if nobody said "up".
There were only 2 mules there Fanfare, but there's a mule sale there soon. I meant to get a flyer on it for you, but I forgot.

I'll look it up. I found one in TN for 250 that sounds...interesting. He's quite pretty. Supposedly "work broke" and hasn't been messed with in 3 years. I'd offer them 100, but mom would kill me. I keep telling her I need a "practice mule" for when i get mine in 2010, but I'm not having much luck.
I'll try to look up that mule auction, though.
I'm glad horses were bringing good money.
