I am hoping someone could explain this.
When my little bay colt was born he had about four or five little white hairs on his forhead. You can see them slightly down and right of the crater of a cowlick here.

Well, as the colt has shed, those four white hairs seem to have exploded. He went from four to four hundred.

So what would that classify as? The skin is not marked, so would it technically not be a marking? For registration purposes, would that be a "very faint star", "few white hairs"(even though there is more than a few currently), what?
He makes me wonder what that patch of white will look like as he grows.

I would consider it few white hairs. Definitely not a star. You can always send pics with his registration for clarification.

I had a foal born with star a few white hairs trickling down from it, that by the time the shed off was finished it ended up with a strip that went from star to nose, not a big one but one that definitley showed up ....

Champagne Forever of SBR fame had white hairs like that even at 6yrs. old.
His papers say no markings on his face

I would probaly call it a faint, roaned, star.
Faint = no pink skin
roaned =descriptive
star = the location between crown and lower corners of eyes.
or
white hairs on forehead.
And send pics.
Sounds like there is some sabino factoring in the genetics there, it will cause odd bits of roaning here or there, some may not appear until the horse is 2 or older and the roaning may increase a bit with age. are there any white marks on the foal? You may find 'haloes' or roaning at the edges that develops.
looks to be a darker shade - liver?

very interesting. . . it seems as though my horses white markings always get smaller with age. Louie was born with almost a blaze, and now barely has a faint stripe connecting his white nose to a teeny little star. Is this normal for markings to change sizes/locations/shapes like this?

He is turning an almost black bay. The only other white on him are irregular hind coronet markings(not a good time to get pics of them) and a definite snip. I will definitely send pics with my registration.

I swear all our colts this year came out of the wrong mares. The red chestnut mare had the colt the bay mare should have had. The bay mare had the light chestnut with the flaxen mane and tail, both colts by a black stallion. LOL

Yes. Sometimes it depends on whether the mark is on a portion of the body that will grow more. Other markings come and go. White hairs appear and disappear. Ace's big bright star has not grown in proportion to his face and is now a little bright star. His snip is partially pink skin, and partially hair, so it has changed as he sheds. Also, a rather large ermine spot appeared between the bulbs of his heel as the size of his hooves increased.
