What does it mean when a horse is strung out in bridle and hitchy gaited behind????

There can be many things causing these problems. The horse could be poorly balanced (which in itself could be cause by a myriad of things from improper shoeing to poor riding), not in proper physical shape to be performing the tasks being asked of him, and many other things.
Could you describe more about what you mean by "hitchy gaited behind?" Are you talking about a horse that isn't taking a full stride every now and then at the trot/kind of skipping or hopping? If this is the case, being strung out in the bridle and being "hitchy" could possibly be related. Some horses just plain can't trot that fast/need to be balanced by their riders. If the horse is getting strung out and ahead of himself this may be causing the hitchiness. Maybe his back end just can't keep up.
