Here is my 8 month old son two days ago on my moms Park mare. This mare is 16.2hh, has always shown park as she is too hot for pleasure but her hocks won't hold up to be gaited. We don't have Walk Trot classes here, so this is where she fits. My son LOVES to be around the horses - as soon as we put him on her he started smiling and laughing the whole time. We had to pry the reins out of his hands. He also insists on watching constantly while the horses are being worked and loves petting them in the crossties. I think he inherited the horse gene!

Thanks! He LOVES when I take him to see the horses - he just loves to pet them. I hope he continues this when he is older, it would be fun to have a horsey little man around! Of course, my husband just smiles, sighs and says "so I guess this means in a few years we will be getting him his own, right?" I just laugh :)

Cute! I put Calloway on my mother in law's Big Lick TWH about a month ago - too cute! And he attended his first horse show over the weekend. I can't wait!

Thats awesome! I leave on Thursday for a show (I show groom), and Owen is going to be spending the weekend with his Grandma - she is super excited. We leave Thursday morning and get back Monday night - it will be tough leaving him here, but it is just going to be so hectic I don't want the stress of having him there as well as everything else, and his grandma will take great care of him. My husband will of course take care of him after work. Hubby and son will probably drive down to the show on Sunday (its a couple hours away) for the day which would be fantastic! We only have 6 horses going from the barn, so it won't be nearly as busy as some in the past where we have 2-3 grooms and 16-18 head. I am head groom and I have one of the clients who will assist parttime at the show as she is working off her show fees.

I can't wait until he can do walk/trot in a few years - this is probably the horse he will be doing it on too!

I agree completely. My niece (almost 2 now) has been "riding" Captain now for a year. She loves him. She knows Captain's name better than mine and will proudly go up to strangers and declare "I ride Captain". It is even cuter if it is a day that she decides that she must wear her riding helmet and carry her stick horse around; even if mom thinks it is a grocery shopping day.

Cap is completely sweet around her. He stands perfectly still when she is around and just follows her with his head. When she is on him he is very deliberate with his steps. When non-saddlebred people find out that I am letting a baby "ride" a young saddlebred they assume the worst. But Captain has been totting toddlers around the barn since he was 4 and only had about 90 days of riding on him. He has never taken a step wrong with them.

Here is a pick of my sister and niece on Captain last month

So My grandma had a stroke a long time ago. And she can only move the right side of her body so she has to be in a wheel chair. Well she found out I got my new 2 year old stud colt, and she wanted to come out and see him. So I brought the colt out, and I was going to keep my distance from my grandma. I mean this is a 2 year old unpredictable stud colt!!!

This colt wont stand still to save his LIFE. He dances around, and he is HOT! So we left his stall and I'm trying to get him to relax... get him to walk but he refuses to walk so he just jogs... then as we turn a corner, my grandma is in view and get closer, he ears up, and starts walking real calm like. And then I tell him to park out and he just stands there. I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT!!!! I mean this is my STUD COLT who is basically WILD on the ground, just standing....

My grandma was like I want to pet him! I was real nervous and told her absolutely NOT, but she didn't listen. My horse, Jack, bent his head down and let her pet him, and didn't move a muscle. No trying to bite her, no swishing at the flies, no NOTHING! He stood there like a perfect gentleman. I have NEVER seen him act this well behaved.

I really couldn't believe it!

To this day... the day when he met my grandma was his best manners... Now he is gelded and he still doesn't have manners like that.

It was the craziest thing ever.

No, Smurphy, not crazy.

Saddlebreds have been family horses long, long before they were bred as show horses. Genes will tell. They know the difference between vulnerability and someone they can goof off and play with and adjust their behavior accordingly.

If you are ever feeling under the weather or hurt, watch how his behavior is, I think you'll be just as surprised.

There are so many reasons to prefer Saddlebreds. Temperament is definitely up there in the top 5.

Crazy or not... it was the coolest thing ever to see in person. And I wouldn't have believed it of my horse unless I saw it with my own eyes.

One more reason why horses are magnificant creatures!
