Coming home after teaching my evening class today, I saw a beautiful dog in the median of the Interstate, getting ready to dodge traffic on the other side of the road. I thought she probably belonged to the farm on the other side of the Interstate, but I couldn't stand the idea of that lovely creature getting hit, so I stopped, backed up about a half-mile and ran across two lanes of traffic to the median. She came as soon as I called her, I dragged her back to my car by her collar and deposited her in the car with every intention of getting off at the next exit and dropping her off at the farm I saw.
But then I petted her. The poor little thing is just skin and bones and covered with ticks. There's no way she could have come from that farm. I brought her home, fed her (she acted like she hadn't seen food in weeks), put a flea/tick product on her, cut the mats out of her hair, brushed her and left her in the tack room to rest. Through all this, she licked me and acted like she'd been used to being the center of someone's attention. :)She looks like she's a well-bred dog: a purebred blue-spotted Austrailian Shepherd or a blue-merle collie, maybe (longish hair). Her teeth are really white so I'm guessing she's young, but a vet would obviously know better. She's had some training, because she walked well on a leash.
She's beautiful, smart and has been someone's well-loved pet at some point, but she's obviously been on her own for awhile. If I knew where to look for her family, I'd give it a shot, but she could have traveled for miles (or gotten out of a car somehow, etc.). Sweet as she is, I can't keep her because I already have three dogs of my own and another one I found half-dead at a truck stop months ago that I'm still trying to find a home for.
I'm probably going to take her to the local feed store in a day or two so she can look for a home there, but figured I'd ask first if anyone here might be willing to bring this girl into their family. Anybody interested?
The only downside to her I've seen so far is that she was a little *too* interested in my barn cats, so I don't think she'd be good in a home with cats.
