Can mules be registered with the Half Saddlebred Registry?

As long as one parent is a purebred saddlebred registered with the AHSA, it looks like you'll be OK.

You may also want to register mules at the ADMS, especially if you want to show or participate in other venues.

They offer a nice network.

Oh yes I should have specified, saddlebred mule. I would have every intention of registering with the ADMS. I was just curious if they could be as half saddlebred and didn't want to bug the association with a call. Since they aren't horses and all, better check. Not that it would matter, really.

I would call them and specifically check that it is not somewhere in the rules, because I know you can not register a Half-Arabian mule as a Half-Arabian, the Half-Arab registry only takes horses and ponies.

When the time comes I will definitely call. It is not really going to matter all that much. Just a novelty thing, I guess. Thanks a lot!

I recall a few years back someone we know called the registry and was told that a mule is not a horse and therefore cannot be registered in the Saddlebred registry as a half Saddlebred - the registry is only open to horses. Most breeds do the same.

That was what I was thinking. They aren't. Either way will be fine with me.
Hmm...maybe there could be a 'Saddlebred Mule' registry....Nah, they aren't that popular.

I would want one - I am a big fan of mules and of course Saddlebreds so it would be the best of both worlds!

Mom told me the only way I was going to have one was if I bred my mare. I am going to breed her next year for my mule. Here is the Jack I am going to use. He was imported from Spain in the '90s. They told me that they have had 100% success rate with the AI that they have done with him. http://members.aol.com/brayhaven/bj.htm I think my baby is going to look like "Bunny" on that page.

Here's a pic of my friend Scott's spotted mini jack, Frito. He's quite a pistol I am told, and soon to be gelded. Scott has owned and shown Jacks and mules and tells me they are quite different animals to train than horses. Years ago he worked for a thoroughbred trainer and used a donkey to train foals to lead. He said he would tie a foal to the donkey and the donkey would lead (drag) it around, whether the foal wanted to or not. :whistling: I'm not sure if he was telling me a story or not.

Hah, I've heard that too, but with 4H calves.
I know there is one farm that has a little growing herd of donkeys in with the cattle. Last year, the baby must have done something really bad, because his momma was shoving him in front of her with her ears pinned.
I've been doing lots of reading, and watching. I think I have seen every episode of "Training Mules and Donkeys with Meredith Hodges" on RFD. I have all this year and all next year(I'm going to breed her in '09) to cram as much Mule info as I can.

Looks like he has nice babies on the ground! We don't have our own place yet, and my barn does not allow donkey's or mules so it will be a few years before I get one. I will probably end up doing the same and breeding one myself - there don't seem to be many Saddlebred mules around!

I have raised several mules; 2 out of my spotted saddlebred mare, one out of my NSH mare and my former SO raised 4 out of TWH mares. all were very nice and good saddle mules. There is a difference of training horse vs mule as you have to outsmart the mule. You cannot over power a mule as you will never win.
If you have any questions you can PM me and when i am on line i wouldbe glad to answer any questions you may have. I am not on line very often but I will get back to you ASAP.
Good Luck

Oh thank you so much Lily! Right now, mule-less as I am, there are no pressing questions that I have right off the top of my head, but if I do have any I will definitely PM you.
Actually, I know that they physically mature considerably slower than Horses, and you shouldn't start breaking them to ride until they are at least three. Does that go with driving as well, or can you start that before three?

A friend of ours had Percheron mules for a number of years (did mules in 4H even), and she did not believe in doing anything beyond ground work before three years. I rode one of her three yr old Perch mules and she was very very smart. It was only the 3 or 4 time anyone had been on her, and she learned extremely fast - we went through a pile of trail obstacles and she even brushed stones off the bridge with her foot before stepping on it!

We always would break then to drive in their 2 year old year but we would never "push" them as they are slow to mature mentally & physically. PATIENCE and outsmarting are the key words to having a good mule in the end and not a people hater. Mules NEVER FORGET so you must not make a mistake that will keep them from being a people oriented animal. We have been lucky all of the ones that we had raised love people and you can go out in the field at anytime to catch them. Ususally they come to the fence. I will say that a mule will not make up to a strange person as quickly as a horse. A mule has to know you.
anyway best of luck to you and just PM me anytime
